Dear Sardis Community
The Agriculture Program at Sardis Secondary has continued to provide relevant, hands-on experiences for students that align with the horticulture industry of British Columbia. The development of the Sardis Secondary School Farm began in 2009. Teachers and students have fundraised for these accessible learning spaces and transformed them into a year-round facility in School District 33.
We are proud that the program has grown to have many community and provincial sponsors and donors who provide our classes at Sardis and members of our participating Family of Schools with access to a continuous garden-based learning environment.
For the past seven years, we have been fundraising for the expansion of a tunnel greenhouse on the Sardis Secondary School Farm. We hope to offer students more learning experiences, prepare them for the workforce, and provide them with many learning opportunities, during the school year and summer.
- Our program provides students the skills to grow flowers and food using sustainable methods.
- Our Annual Mother's Day Plant Sale dates back forty years.
- Students learn industry practices while using environmentally sound strategies to deal with pests and diseases.
- Our students are encouraged to participate in the Farm-to-Table concept with their families by taking home and enjoying the food they grow.
- Through our donation program and participation in the Salvation Army's Plant A Row program, students learn the value of community and giving.
We are looking to our local community and families for help in achieving our next goal of building a tunnel greenhouse at the Sardis Secondary School Farm.
Our goal is to raise $110,000, and we are collecting donations between November 20, 2024, and January 31, 2025. Income tax receipts will be available for charitable donations over $25. Together, we can bring this next phase to fruition and add another layer of learning to the next generation!

This article, published in the Chilliwack Progress, is a prime example of how this program is helping the community: LETTER: Sardis secondary garden program helps seniors make ends meet!
There are two different programs in the SR 11/12 course: the Spring Program, centered around the Plant sale in May; and the Summer/Fall Program in which the class tends and harvests vegetables like cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. The greenhouse is equipped with an irrigation system that doubles as a fertilizer for the plants, called Fertigation. In the barn next to the greenhouse chickens have been raised several times, as well as ducks and turkeys. The barn also doubles as a storage facility.
Every spring many varieties of flowers are cultivated by SR 11/12 students, including pansies, geraniums and many other varieties of decorative plants. But the green and the growing is not limited to the set curriculum. As much as the students can think of it, that's the extent of the potential of this course. Raising chickens is one example of this. The pond is a project that testifies to the ingeniousness of many past students. From a hole in the ground has come a natural oasis for all to enjoy.
